A melange of dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, mint, spice and rose petal builds as this towering, dramatic Pauillac shows off its allure. Nuanced and poised, with seemingly endless layers of nuance, the 2015 is super-impressive. The 2015 is dense, plush and totally voluptuous as it sweeps across the palate to make its presence known. “A dramatic, sweeping wine, the Pichon-Longueville Baron is even better from bottle than it was from barrel. This is certainly within first growth quality. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannin, great depth and cohesion, gently gripping the mouth although not as tannic or as masculine as I was anticipating, exhibiting great finesse on the finish. It possesses and extraordinarily pure but intense bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone and graphite that seem to gain intensity with aeration. “The 2015 Pichon-Longueville Baron was a superlative wine from barrel and I have no reason to change that view now that it is in bottle. These vineyards were part of his daughter Thrses dowry when she married Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville in 1694, the year Chteau Pichon Baron was. The 2015 vintage is a blend of Merlot (55%), Cabernet Sauvignon (27%), Cabernet Franc (13%) and Petit Verdot (5%).
Les Tourelles de Longueville is the estate's Second Wine, mainly from the Sainte Anne plot, mostly planted with Merlot. Pichon Baron has been owned by AXA, a French insurance company, since 1987. The vineyard covers 73 hectares, planted with the usual Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Raoul's half became Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, while Virginie's became Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Upon his death, his children Raoul and Virginie inherited half of the property each. Originally, Pichon-Baron was part of a huge property formerly known as Château Pichon Longueville, owned by Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville who died in 1850.
